The department of Automobile Application engineering was founded in 1956 with the help of experts from the former Soviet Union after the founding of jilin University of Technology in 1955. It is the first major of automobile application and repair in China. Automobile Application engineering began to enroll undergraduate students in 1956, began to enroll master students in 1961, got the right to confer doctoral degree in 1986, the original doctoral program in automobile application engineering was renamed as doctoral program in Vehicle Application engineering in 1997. In 2003, the university established a doctor's degree program in traffic environment and safety technology, and a bachelor's degree program in automobile Service engineering in 2004.

The Department of Automotive Application Engineering covers vehicle application engineering and transportation Environment and safety technology with two doctoral degrees (with master's authorization), as well as two bachelor's degrees in transportation (automobile application engineering) and automobile service engineering.

In 1986, it obtained the right to confer doctoral degree, which was the first unit to confer doctoral degree in this discipline in China. For many years, automobile application engineering has been in a leading position in the domestic industry, and has an important position and extensive influence in the field of road transportation.
In 1997, the Ministry of Education renamed the former doctoral program of Automobile Application Engineering as the Doctoral program of Vehicle Application Engineering.
In 2003, the Ministry of Education approved jilin University to establish a doctoral program in Traffic Environment and Safety technology.
In 1998, the Ministry of Education changed the former undergraduate major of Automobile Application Engineering into the major of Transportation (Automobile Application Engineering).
In 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of automobile service engineering undergraduate major, since 2005 for the national formal enrollment.
The Institute of Automotive Application Engineering was established in June 2001 on the basis of the Department of Vehicle Application Engineering. It is mainly responsible for horizontal and provincial level longitudinal research projects. All the faculty and staff of the Department of Automotive Application Engineering are part-time members of the institute.

The Department of Automotive Application Engineering has 26 faculty members, including 10 professors and researchers (including 6 doctoral supervisors), 11 associate professors, senior engineers and associate researchers. Since the establishment of the major, it has cultivated more than 4000 students of all kinds, including more than 30 doctoral students and more than 200 master students. Most of the graduates are assigned to the national transportation and management system ministries and bureaus, universities, famous research institutes, publishing houses and large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises. Some choose to develop their talents in coastal areas, foreign-related enterprises and well-known large groups (companies). As a result of their solid foundation, quality is higher, so most can stand out in a short time, become technical core or backbone force. The department of professional testing facilities, advanced testing equipment, built a provincial automobile center testing station.
By the end of 2007, the department had completed more than 150 scientific research projects, of which about 1/3 were national and ministerial projects. In recent years, the annual scientific research funds are over 2 million yuan. He has written more than ten textbooks and monographs of this major. In recent years, he has won 8 national and provincial scientific research awards, including 2 first prizes, 5 second prizes and 1 third prize.
